Cixi's actions and methods were at times controversial, and in 1898 she thwarted an assassination attempt sanctioned by Emperor Guangxu, her adopted son. Memoirist Chang (Wild Swans) melds her deep knowledge of Chinese history with deft storytelling to unravel the empress dowager's behind-the-throne efforts to "Make China Strong" by developing international trade, building railroads and utilities, expanding education, and constructing a modern military. Cixi did not trust these men to competently rule China, so she conspired with Empress Zhen, her close friend and the deceased emperor's first wife, to orchestrate a coup. When the emperor died in 1861, he bequeathed his title to this son, with regents to oversee his reign. Literate, politically aware, and graceful rather than beautiful, Cixi was not Xianfeng's favorite, but she delivered his firstborn son in 1856. Born in 1835 to a prominent Manchu family, Cixi was chosen in 1852 by the young Chinese Emperor Xianfeng as one of his concubines. Her original first name was considered too inconsequential to enter in the court registry, yet she became the most powerful woman in 19th-century China.

Socrates’ death is a testimony of the failures and disadvantages of democracy. One of the leading philosophers was killed during a trial in the People’s Court. In a narrow public vote, Athenians sentenced Socrates to death by poison. Socrates was accused of “corrupting the youth of Athens” and practicing impiety, and they put him on trial at the People’s Court. 1 “Socrates – The Perceived Fragility of Athenian Democracy.” Encyclopedia Britannica. One of the most vocal critics of democracy was one of the greatest philosophers of Ancient Greece, Socrates (470 B.C.E.–399 B.C.E.). The success of democracy requires passing down the knowledge to the next generation.ĭemocracy was a desirable form of governance.ĭemocracy was a desired rule of governance, but it was not without its critics.Political life should be about improving the quality of life of people.Democracy may lead to freedom, which may lead to tyranny.Voting is a skill and needs to be practiced. One of the leading philosophers was killed during a trial in the People’s Court.Democracy was a desirable form of governance. This is so, in a way, because for Rousseau nature, he tells us, provides no standards or guidelines for determining who should rule. Social contract is his answer to the problem of natural freedom. But I want to start first with the general will which is his answer to the problems of civilization or the political problem of the Second Discourse that we talked about last week, the problems of inequality, the problem of amour-propre, the problem of our general discontent. Today, I want to talk about the general will, Rousseau’s most important contribution to political science and I will also want to talk about the legacies of Rousseau and what he’s meant for the world that he did so much to shape. (It was also a good choice for reading over a cocktail in the Writers’ Bar at Raffles Hotel in Singapore.) Of the others, I thought The Birth of Venus a better book than In the Company of the Courtesan Sacred Hearts has a few flat spots here and there as well, but was a good choice for an airport novel when jet lag and interrupted reading makes anything too challenging problematic. While still sufficiently well-written to intrigue, they’re more straightforward than Mapping the Edge and make me suspect that Dunant and/or her editors are these days aiming more for the popular fiction market than literary fiction. Sacred Hearts is the third of a trilogy of historical novels set in the Italian Renaissance. Its ambiguities and complex narrative lines set the writing apart from the usual ‘women’s fiction’ and I liked it very much. The first of her books that I read was Mapping the Edge, a dark psychological thriller about a woman who disappears while on a short break to Italy. Sarah Dunant is an English author who writes novels that explore ‘women’s issues’ in narratives that play around with time and space. It's very creative, as the animals are not hidden in a Where's Waldo? way, but more like Bev Doolittle's paintings, where an outline is created by negative space, or branches become antlers. You could have fun just reading it on a surface level.īut then you start simultaneously looking for animals hidden in the scenery and doing anagrams based on the missing letters in the alphabet bordering each page to confirm what they are/what you're looking for. The story alone is fun - based on a map in the front, you read pages of a diary written for you that ask you to travel all around this made-up wild island, each full-page illustration showing you a different part of it, filled with cool animals. This book is incredible I'm so mad I didn't know about it until last year, when someone was searching for it on a lost-book forum. |
